Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao and actress Wamiq Gabbi, will hit theaters on May 23 after much controversy.
Amid the ongoing OTT and theater controversy, Bhool Chuk Maaf is expected to have a decent opening day, likely collecting around Rs 5 crore across India, having already sold over 30,000 tickets in top national cinema chains already.
Initially scheduled for release on May 9, the Karan Sharma-directed film’s release was postponed to May 16, 2025, and later shifted directly to Prime Video due to heightened security tensions between India and Pakistan. In an Instagram post, Maddock Films announced, “In light of the recent events and heightened security drills across the nation, we at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16 only on Prime Video, worldwide.”
However, this sudden change garnered negative feedback, especially from PVR Inox, which sent a legal notice to Maddock Films and Pen Marudhar. A source from PVR Inox stated, “It is highly unfortunate that a project promoted on this scale was pulled without formal communication. As India’s leading theatrical platform, we invest heavily in campaigns in good faith and expect content partners to uphold basic standards of professionalism.”
PVR Inox argued that the decision of the film’s direct release on OTT platform was a clear breach of their binding agreement which was signed on May 6, 2025. The agreement mandated not only a theatrical release but also an 8-week exclusivity window before any digital premiere on OTT platforms or media channels.
The film follows a groom stuck in a time loop just before his marriage, becoming desperate and frustrated. To break the curse, the character starts apologizing to everyone he has ever met.
