Kamal Haasan may have referred to his recent comment “Kannada born out of Tamil” as a remark that was made out of love, but it clearly didn’t go down well with many. It failed to pacify the agitated Karnataka Rakshana Vedike. For the unversed, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike is a pro-Kannada organisation that is led by Praveen Shetty. Unhappy with the comment, Praveen filed a complaint with the Bengaluru Police. They not only lodged the complaint at the RT Nagar police station, but also demanded legal action against the actor.
As mentioned in the complaint, the organisation had alleged that the “controversial statement” that was made by star Kamal Hassan has not only hurt Kannadigas’ sentiments, but made the bond between Kannadigas and Tamils worse.
“Every time a new Tamil movie is released, they have been constantly hurting the self-respect of Kannadigas. Such statements have been made continuously and have further disrupted peace and order between Kannadigas and Tamils,” the complaint further alleged.
A senior police officer had agreed that they had received a complaint, but they also mentioned that no FIR was registered. Pro-Kannada have been against Kamal Haasan for his “Tamil gave birth to Kannada” remarks. In addition to a police complaint filed against him, a film association has also been mulling a possible ban on him ahead of his upcoming release Thug Life.
During the audio launch of his much-anticipated film, Thug Life, which was held in Chennai, Kamal had mentioned his connection with the Tamil language. He began the speech by saying, “Uyire Urave Tamizhe (My life and my family is Tamil).” He added, “Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That’s why he is here. That’s why when I started my speech, I said ‘my life and my family is Tamil’. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line.”
Later, Kamal turned to Kannada actor Shivarajkumar, and said, “Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state… Your language was born out of Tamil. So, you are included in that line.”
