Vidhu Vinod Chopra reveals Sanjay Dutt was banned by the industry; shares he never wanted to cast him in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S
Vidhu Vinod Chopra has been basking in the super success of his movie, 12th Fail starring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr. Over the years, he has been known for delivering so many amazing stories on the silver screen. The most famous one being Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. film series. Sanjay Dutt played the lead role in the movie. However, Sanjay was never the first choice for the film. In the recent interaction, Vidhu Vinod Chopra revealed that he never intended to work with Sanjay at all.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s shocking revelation
The 3 Idiots and PK maker sat down for a chat with Kellogg Management School wherein he opened up on the time when Sanjay Dutt was banned in the industry. The Khalnayak actor was convicted in a terrorism case. Chopra felt that it was wrong and he went to Sanjay Dutt’s house and announced a film with him. Sunil Dutt warned him saying that he (Chopra) might get banned by the industry too. However, Vidhu Vinod Chopra never cared about it.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra never intended to work with Sanjay Dutt
After Sanjay Dutt came out of the jail, he called Chopra up right from the car. Sanjay told him that he wanted his first comeback film with him. But the filmmaker denied him saying, “I’ll never make a film with you, I just announced it because it was the right thing to do.” Vidhu Vinod Chopra calls Sanjay a good man but a simple man. You see, Sanjay actually thought that he would work with the filmmaker. Chopra told Sanjay that he would only work with him if the equation changed because he could not exploit a good deed.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra gave him the role of Jimmy Shergill. At that time, Shah Rukh Khan was going to be Munna Bhai. However, SRK backed out because of some throat issues. Then Vidhu decided that Sanjay was the right guy for the role. He reveals, told him, “You’re doing Munna Bhai’. And he’s such a simple fellow, he said, ‘I know’. I said, ‘No, not that role, main Munna Bhai’. He said, ‘Okay, if you say so, I’ll do it’. He never reads a script…”

Rajkumar Hirani made his directorial debut with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. The director would often complain to Chopra whenever Sanjay did not show up to work on time.
