Bombay Velvet – Bollywood’s big flop
Many may or may not know Bombay Velvet. The movie starred Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the leading roles. It was a gangster drama. It also starred Karan Johar in a pivotal role. The film was directed by Anurag Kashyap. It was is first attempt to make a commercial Bollywood style masala drama. But it failed. In one of the interviews, Anurag Kashyap revealed that the script was written with Saif Ali Khan in mind. But that did not happen. As reported by India Today, Anurag Kashyap once said, “My first choice when I wrote the film in 2006 was Saif Ali Khan. From there it went to Aamir and Hrithik. This film has gone around before landing with Ranbir. We also tried to make it with Ranbir Singh but we could raise only Rs 40 to 50 crore.” He also spoke about the film being made in a budget of Rs 90 crore. He said that it was expensive since beginning and it was supposed to be Rs 300 crore film but was made in less.
At the box office, Bombay Velvet barely made Rs 43.20 crore. It was a disaster. Karan once even claimed that he regrets his decision. He said, “No one has offered me any film after ‘Bombay Velvet’. It was such a disastrous debut that I did not get any single offer. I am dying… Waiting for someone to offer me something,” during an interaction with media.
