Box office report card of Bollywood films always pique interest of the audience. At the end of the year, it is all about the top highest-grossing films and who managed to beat whom! So here’s a throwback to the year 2002. The year was marked with some of the most iconic films like Devdas, Kaante, Saathiya and others. But amid these biggies, a horror movie managed to succeed.
This horror movie did not have any A-listers back then and was made on a small budget. However, it performed well at the box office and turned out to be third-highest grossing film of 2002.
Raaz that nailed it at the box office
The movie we are talking about is Raaz, directed by Vikram Bhatt. The horror film starred Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea in lead roles. The film turned out to be a surprise hit. Raaz was made on a small budget of Rs 5.25 crore approximately. When it released, the horror film managed to earn more than Rs 30 crore. It turned to be the third-highest grossing film of 2002. The first one being Devdas. Sanjay Leela Bhandali’s movie starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan that was made on a budget of Rs 50 crore almost made around Rs 100 crore at the box office. The second highest grossing film of the year was Kaante that starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty and many more.
Raaz was a hit and is still considered to be one of the best horror films by Bollywood. As per reports, the film was first offered to Anil Kapoor. However, he allegedly rejected the role. For the role of female protagonist, Lisa Ray was roped in. But she reportedly backed out for personal reasons. Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea came on-board and it became a hit. It received several nominations at various award functions.
