The film industry is known for paying fat pay cheques to male actors. However, actresses are paid comparatively less and it has always been a topic of discussion or debate. For the past few years, the pay disparity topic has been taken seriously, as even some actresses have started calling out such unfair practices. But did you know there was an actress in the past who was the first one to charge Rs 1 crore for her movie?
What’s interesting is that when the actress demanded Rs 1 crore for the project, it was a signing amount that even Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, or Salman Khan had not started demanding. No, it’s not Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, or Alia Bhatt. We are talking about Sridevi. The late actress had won hearts with her performances in Hindi as well as in the South Indian film industry.
During the years 1992 to 1997, Khans used to charge approximately Rs 75 lakh per film. But Sridevi’s fee was the Rs 1 crore mark in the 90s until she announced retirement from Bollywood films. As reported by India.com, in the year 1997, the Hawa Hawai girl announced retirement from movies. At the age of 33, the actress did her last film, Judaai, which was widely praised.
On the personal front, Sridevi was married to producer Boney Kapoor. The couple has two daughters: Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. In 2018, the actress passed away in her hotel room in Dubai. Her death is reported to be due to accidental drowning in a bathtub. The actress’s death had shaken the entire film industry. The actress’ last theatrical appearance was in the movie MOM, for which she was posthumously awarded the National Film Award in the Best Actress category.
