Amid controversy, Kamal Haasan gets support from MNM, posters of star put across Chennai; ‘Truth will never bow…’

South superstar Kamal Haasan landed in a big controversy after he made a statement which links the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil.

South superstar Kamal Haasan has been facing constant criticism from pro-Kannada groups, his party, Makkal Needhi Mayiam (MNM), has been showing strong support by putting up posters all over Chennai. On Tuesday, the city showcased Kamal Haasan’s posters from MNM.

The posters defend Kamal Haasan’s comment and read, “He said what’s known to the world”, “He said what the relationship was between two (languages)”, “Love will never apologise” and “Truth will never bow down its head”.

A look at the post

For the uninitiated, Kamal Haasan attended the Thug Life audio launch event in Chennai and his statement created chaos on the social media. He made a statement linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. “Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That’s why he is here. That’s why when I started my speech, I said ‘my life and my family is Tamil’. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line”.

The actor even wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and claimed that his statement was ‘misinterpreted’. He further said, “It pains me that my statement at the Thug Life audio launch, spoken out of genuine affection for the legendary Dr. Rajkumar’s family, especially Shiva Rajkumar has been misunderstood and taken out of context. My words were intended only to convey that we are all one and from the same family and not to diminish Kannada in any way. There is no dispute or debate on the rich legacy of Kannada language”.

He concluded by saying, “Like Tamil, Kannada has a proud literary and cultural tradition that I have long admired. Throughout my career, I have cherished the warmth and affection extended to me by the Kannada-speaking community, and I say this with a clear conscience and conviction: my love for the language is genuine, and I have great respect for the love that Kannadigas have for their mother tongue”.

The actor has refused to apologize and has moved the HC to seek direction from authorities. According to Live Law, the bench said, “If it is a reply of apology, we will take it. There is no apology in it. You may be Kamal Hassan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses.”

Kamal Haasan will be seen in Thug Life which is directed by the acclaimed Mani Ratnam. The film features Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan T R, with music composed by A R Rahman. The film is made on a budget of Rs 300 crore.
