Emilia Perez defeats All We Imagine As Light to win Best Film Not in English Language, Conclave bags Best Picture award; see full list of winners

At this year’s BAFTA Awards, Payal Kapadia’s critically-acclaimed film All We Imagine As Light lost out to the French film Emilia Perez in the Best Film Not in the English Language category. Even though the lead star Karla Sofia Gascon was slammed for past controversial tweets, which were seen as both Islamophobic and racist, Emilia Perez won the top honor during the awards ceremony that was held in London. Zoe Saldana, who played the film’s second lead, too bagged the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.

Emilia Perez, which has been directed by Jacques Audiard, revolves around the journey of four extraordinary women in Mexico who are busy turning their dreams into reality. The story focuses on cartel boss Emilia (Gascon), who employs Rita (Saldana), to help her in faking her own death so she can finally live as her real self.

At the Golden Globes this year, Emilia Perez had bagged the award in the Best Motion Picture Non-English Language category by beating out All We Imagine…, The Girl With the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Vermiglio.

Popular for her award-winning documentary A Night of Knowing Nothing, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light revolves around the lives of three women- Prabha, a head nurse; Anu, a new hire; and Parvaty, a hospital cook. They all grapple with personal and professional difficulties while balancing their hectic and demanding careers. Kapadia delves deeper into the themes of female companionship, love and self-discovery and is set against the ever-changing backdrop of the bustling metropolis of Mumbai.
Other films that were also nominated for the Film Not in the English Language BAFTA included I’m Still Here (Portuguese), Kneecap (Irish/English), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Persian).

At the 78th British Academy Film Awards, The Brutalist scooped four awards including best director for Brady Corbet and best actor for Adrien Brody. Mikey Madison won the best actress prize for Brooklyn tragicomedy Anora. Papal thriller Conclave, which had 12 nominations, took home four awards – including outstanding British film and Best film.
