Set in the year 2898 AD, in a world ravaged by apocalyptic events, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ reimagines the epic Mahabharata through a dystopian lens. As per the trailer the central plot revolves around the mystery of an unborn child and whether this child is the prophesied Kalki, the 10th avatar of Vishnu, destined to end the Kali Yuga and usher in the Satya Yuga.

The film introduces a compelling array of characters, each connected to the unborn child’s fate. Amitabh Bachchan portrays Ashwatthama, the immortal son of Drona, now a guardian of Sumati’s unborn child, who symbolizes hope and the potential for a renewed future. Deepika Padukone‘s Sumati is the mother of the child embodying both maternal anxiety and hope. Prabhas‘s Bhairav, motivated by the promise of a bounty, and ably supported by Bujji his all powerful car, seeks to capture the mother Sumati for personal gain. Kamal Haasan’s Yaskin , the personification of Evil , recognising the child’s potential as a beacon of hope, perceives it as a threat to humanity’s current order.

This narrative intertwines with Hindu mythology, particularly the legend of Kalki from the Puranas. According to these ancient texts, Kalki is prophesied to appear at the end of the Kali Yuga, the darkest and most destructive era, to restore dharma (righteousness) and rejuvenate the world. Ashwatthama’s role as the protector of this potential savior links the story back to the Mahabharata, enriching the film’s mythological depth.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is a production of Vyjayanthi Movies, produced by C. Aswani Dutt, Priyanka Dutt, and Swapna Dutt. The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. It is set to hit theatres on 27th June 2024.
