He was in a serious relationship with actress and fashion designer Anju Mahendru. They were in a live in relationship for seven years. But they parted ways due to compatibility issues. Anju Mahendru spoke to Screen and spoke about the reason behind their separation. She said that Rajesh Khanna was quite orthodox, which clashed with her ultra-modern thinking.
She said that he would criticise everything that she wore. She shared, “Confusion was a part of our relationship. If I wore a skirt, he’d snap, ‘Why don’t you wear a saree?’ If I wore a saree, he’d wrinkle his nose and say, ‘Why are you trying to project a Bhartiya nari look?”
She also said that her frankness was another reason behind their separation. Rajesh Khanna wanted to marry Anju but the reason behind their breakup was a cricketer as well. As per reports, the rumours about West Indies cricketer Gary Sobers and Anju’s relationship left Rajesh Khanna upset.
These rumours made them get separated and after a year of their breakup, Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia. They have two daughters we well, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna.
